Zir Than Hnuni’s path from silence to leadership in Myanmar’s Chin State is a story of remarkable resilience in the face of both patriarchal religious systems and conflict. Educated in India and Amsterdam, she encountered gender equality frameworks that sparked her feminist convictions, only to return home and find herself barred from leadership roles by her religious community. For nearly a decade, she suppressed her professional identity. The turning point came in 2013 when a gathering of elderly men planning community development realized they needed her skills. Seizing that opening, she co-founded the Hualngo Land Development Organization (HLDO), eventually rising to Managing Director — and becoming one of SHIFT Asia’s most powerful voices for indigenous women’s leadership in Myanmar.
