Hopelink Action Foundation Uganda (HAF Uganda)

Hopelink Action Foundation Uganda (HAF Uganda) is an independent, non-for-profit, humanitarian national non-governmental organization, which provides assistance, protection and durable solutions to refugees and internally displaced persons in Uganda. HAF Uganda promotes and protects the rights of people who have been forced to flee their countries, or their homes within their countries. It is one of the few Uganda’s organizations that specializes in national efforts aimed at this target group.

HAF Uganda supports empowerment, development and strives to improve social inclusion and wellbeing in Uganda. HAF Uganda invests in creating a peaceful future for children and restore hope for individuals and family affected by conflicts and adversities. It is amazing to partner with us!

HAF Uganda’s core Values reflect what we want to disseminate externally and, even more important, reflect the culture we feel is necessary to reach our strategic objectives. As a HAF Uganda representative, it is important to be conscious on these values, act accordingly and produce work in line with them.

Good Practice

Approach (es) that enhance access to timely and quality comprehensive MHPSS services; strengthen the capacity of community structures, duty bearers and stakeholders to identify, respond, support and refer persons in need of MHPSS is a great tool.

Thematic Areas We Work In

  1. Mental Health Psychosocial Support: Biopsychosocial MHPSS intervention Model.
  2. Education & Child Protection Intervention: Blended EdTech + SEL programs, training teachers on SEL and technology-based learning
  3. Emergency response Intervention: 
  4. SGBV & Reproductive Health Intervention: Culturally appropriate SGBV prevention and response.
  5. Livelihood- Critical skilling Intervention for the youths and adolescent affected by conflict and other adversities.
  6. Climate crisis intervention: Tree planting, community sensitization, solar use in the community, energy saving stoves, recycling of waste for socioeconomic and environmental safety.

Current Challenge

HAF successfully secured funds to implement the following projects;

  1. Multi-year Resilience Program funded by ECW- through Street Child and Save The Children (Uganda Education Consortium). The project being implemented in Kyangwali (2023 to 2025)
  2. Flying Colors Project funded by The LEGO Foundation. Project is being implemented in Palablek Refugee settlement (Feb 2022 to Dec 2023). We have reached and improved learning outcome of 714 learners in Palabek refugee settlement and the surrounding host community
  3. Ubumwe Project: Arts for Education and Public Health with Refugee Children and Youth Funded by Columbia University (April 2023 to Dec 2023). We improved the psychosocial wellbeing of 690 learners in Kyangwali refugee settlement.
  4. Community FM Radio in Kyangwali. With funding from REF-FM, HAF Uganda together with AAH is established a community Based FM Radio station to support community mobilization, awareness raising and dissemination of critical protection information to PoCs in Kikuube District.
  5. Storytelling project funded by ChildPlay International in Palabek settlement (May 2023 to Dec 2023). A total of 78 children aged 8 to 12 engaged in storytelling programs in Palabek refugee settlement and the surrounding host community.

Successes and Victories in Implementing

HAF Uganda Successfully implemented the following projects;

  1. Projects with funding from (IAMSCS). 
  • University challenges –283 students from UCL, Makerere, Mbarara and Kyanbogo.
  • MHPSS in 4 PS in Gulu District in 2018 to 2022. Over 400 learners supported.
  • MHPSS Toll Free Help Line in Gulu supported over 1,719 community members during COVID-19 pandemic 2020 to 2021.
  • Distributed over 80 solar radios in Gulu in 2021.
  • Trained 36 teachers on MHPSS
  1. Development of Tookkits for PSS and SEL (PSS-SEL).
  • HAF Uganda participated in developing PSS-SEL toolkit led by INEE and Harvard University in 2020-22.
  • As an Anchor Organization, HAF Uganda planned, conducted step down workshops and collected feedbacks on the PSS-SEL in 2021. Reached out to over 48 stakeholders in Uganda

  1. Colors of Kindness (COK) Project in Nakivale and Oruchinga Settlements, Isingiro District funded by Amal Alliance.
  • Successfully impacted the lives of 2,793 (Boys-1381, Girls-1412) by Color of Kindness (Psychosocial and Socio Emotional Learning (PSS-SEL) in Nakivale refugee Settlement in 2022 to 2023. 
  • Children and adolescents reported improved emotional wellbeing as a result of COK project.

  1. MHPSS Toll Free Help Line funded by War Child Holland.
  • Supported over 929 refugees and 416 host community with MHPSS Toll Free Help Line, during the peak of COVID-19 pandemic in Kyangwali refugee settlement 
  • Supported 237 cases in Kyangwali during COVID-19 pandemic.
  • War Child Holland Linked us to REF FM for FM Radio establishment.
