DEPROSC-Nepal is an NGO established in September 1993 under Association Registration Act 1978 as a non-governmental organization (NGO). It is also affiliated with SWC as per Social Welfare Council Act 1992. It has been promoting participatory development with dedicated leadership and values: pro-poor, neutrality, transparency, participation, flexibility and value for money. It has worked in 69 districts with diverse communities, cultures, and themes managing partnerships with multiple actors. It has served 1.8 million (https://deprosc.org.np/resources/reflections/) populations. It has partnered with major donor communities in Nepal and mobilized NRs. 3,029,941,880.00 (grant only) for 96 projects. It has expertise in four thematic areas: Enterprise development, Climate and Disaster Resilience, Access to Finance and Migration.

DEPROSC-Nepal has extensively engaged in the field of rural finance since its establishment. It has envisioned access to microfinance for the women, dalits, janajatis and other disadvantaged rural poor as key tool to poverty reduction and social change. Financial literacy has remained a core segment of overall microfinance and other socio-economic development programmes, however content and its magnitude of delivery has been changing over time It has run number of business literacy and financial literacy projects starting since 1996 in Rautahat and 1997 in Morang. It implemented direct lending to underprivileged families through their female members following grameen model, with license from the Nepal Rastra Bank under the Financial Intermediary Act 1998 to work as financial intermediary in an integrated approach trying to balance social and economic prosperity of its beneficiaries. After contributing in microfinance sector for nearly 15 years and empowering thousands of rural people, esp. rural women through access to finance; It handed over its microfinance portfolio to two national level micro finance institutions; Deprosc Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha in 2002 and NADEP Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha in 2015. Both financial institutions are now doing well in the market. Initially when DEPROSC-Nepal handed over these institutions, there was over 49862 members, NRs. 1,200,122,986 loan and NRs. 491,533,353.00 as savings, but now they have grown and providing financial services to more than 200,000 families with more than 3 billion of loan portfolio.

Further, CBOs and User Groups were trained through facilitative financial literacy training which covered relatively broader aspects of financial literacy. Some 282 Savings and Credit Organizations; 4374 Savings and Credit Groups; 608 Leasehold Forestry User's Groups; 110 Community Forestry User's Group, 300 Commodity Production Groups, 4,789 Irrigation User Groups, 410 drinking Water User's Group, and number of marketing groups were trained under various projects executed. Major topics covered included but not limited to savings, loans, business plans, record keeping, insurance, dealing with banks and financial institutions, remittance and very importantly performance and efficiency measures and sustainability of the CBOs.

Next, it has already completed various business and literacy projects but importantly in USAID’s EIG (Education for Income Generation), BLP (Business Literacy Program), KISAN II, SaMi, Empowering Women Farmers with Digital Finance, are the ones where it has developed training modules. The modules developed covers wide range of literacy and numeracy, nutrition education, life skills, entrepreneurship education and access to finance. Further, different modules on financial literacy have been developed for different typology of beneficiaries. It has served above 200,000 literacy graduates through different programs. It has completed 15 projects benefitting 1,39,855 households under the theme financial services. Office Network and Staff Capacity DEPROSC-Nepal has 48 staffs (F:27, M:21) in Central Office and field offices.

Empowering Women Farmers with Digital Finance (Ongoing)

Draft workplans, targeting criteria, manuals, templates and checklists and finalize with the feedback of from thematic leads of Practical Action and DEPROSC management; Facilitate the team in conducting surveys, studies and identifying gaps in access to finance and develop training packages, ICT materials; Facilitate Training Manager in effectively developing appropriate training modules for the project in consultation with Practical Action, DECOS, Prabhu and other stakeholders; Guide to prepare digitized contents and digital financial literacy materials.. Narrative description of the project: This is a project funded by Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA), led by Practical Action and implemented by DEPROSC-Nepal ‘to increase access of poor and marginalized women farmers to a range of affordable and appropriate digital financial products to support in their agriculture value chain and enterprise development activities. The project targets remote and scattered settlements, indigenous communities like Tharu and Magar that are living with relatively poor coverage of financial services.

The Samunnati Digital Finance, Project is contributing to facilitating digital financial services so that beneficiaries can better perform in selected agricultural commodities. Narrative description of the project’s mobilization demands and how your firm managed that mobilization’s administrative, logistical and financial requirements: Integrated training module-financial education, digital literacy, and women’s empowerment; Women Digital Champions (WDCs) deliver training in local dialects with community trust-relatable training; Participatory sessions including family fostered intra-household behavior change in especially in financial decision making; Contextualized learning built greater trust and confidence in DFS usage, also internet access significantly enhanced it; Facilitated onboarding of local market actors and SMEs as DFS agents to expand rural service outreach; Engaged wallet companies to deliver DFS access in underserved areas. Collaborated with BFIs, supported municipalities in developing digital finance strategies to structure local DFS ecosystem growth; Strengthening to local cooperatives to expand access of formal financial services and DFS. Description of actual services provided by your staff within the assignment: The project has completed the 4 rounds of financial and digital literacy training in 8 local levels of 3 districts Rolpa, East Rukum and Dang of Lumbini Province, as well as graduated 5664 beneficiaries through 273 classes. Among them, 5290 are females, including 681Dalit (652 F), 3177 Janajati (2961 F) and 169 PWDs (People with Disabilities). The project developed 73 local Women digital champions for the facilitation of financial and digital literacy classes. To develop the skill and knowledge as well as to enrich the dissemination capacity of local Women digital champions, the project has provided 9 events of 5-7 days TOTs and refresher training.
